The short answer
The key 2026 change is the transition toward interim center-lane operations for Routes 15 and 15L on the western project segment. RTD’s September 17 announcement set September 27 for that change between Broadway and Colorado Boulevard. That is not the same as the full East Colfax BRT opening. RTD’s September materials place complete service around late 2027 to early 2028; check live alerts for current operations.
What interim operations mean for a rider
A staged transit project can put some infrastructure into use before every planned service feature is operating. Riders should therefore use the current route instructions and station information, rather than assume the final BRT design applies everywhere along Colfax.
For a home search, locate the stop you would use in each direction. A station visible from a property does not necessarily mean the most convenient boarding point is on that side of the street or that your familiar stop remains in its former location.
Why corridor-wide claims need care
The western segment and the remainder of the corridor do not all reach the same milestone at once. RTD’s September 8 update describes an 8.5-mile project between Broadway and I-225 with different operating designs in Denver and Aurora. Avoid translating progress in one segment into a claim that the entire route is complete.
A project map is useful for the overall plan; service alerts are more useful for a trip today. Both matter when deciding whether a specific address supports a workable commute.
Test the actual trip before buying
Plan a weekday departure at the time you normally leave home, then plan the return. Include the walk to the boarding location, crossings, waits and any transfer. Repeat for a weekend or late evening if that is part of your routine.
If transit is central to your decision, ride the route rather than comparing only a map’s travel-time estimate. Observe how the home-to-stop connection feels under the conditions you expect to use it. Keep a realistic backup option for disruptions.
Use dated service information in listings
A seller can accurately describe proximity to a route or station while linking buyers to current service information. Avoid promising a particular commute time or treating every planned BRT feature as available. Buyers should independently verify whether the schedule matches their needs.
This article reflects the official September 2026 announcements reviewed October 28. It is a guide to interpreting the transition, not a substitute for the live timetable. Future service dates remain subject to project progress and agency updates.
Your decision checklist
- Distinguish interim bus-only operations from full BRT.
- Check the boarding location in both directions.
- Read current RTD alerts before riding.
- Include walking and transfer time.
- Treat future completion dates as targets.
Common questions
Did the full BRT system open in September 2026?
No. RTD described interim bus-only lane operations for Routes 15 and 15L. Its September updates distinguish that stage from the later full corridor service.
Can I rely on an old Route 15 stop location?
Verify it. Construction and staged operations can change boarding locations, so use current RTD route information and alerts before travel.
